CASES accreditation is the gold standard for sport and exercise scientists in the UK. It reflects competence within the field and ethical, evidence-based practice. For Joe Phillips, as a performance scientist, earning this recognition is the result of years of dedication to both personal and professional development—balancing rigorous academic training with real-world experience across a variety of applied sport science contexts.

Joe pursued the Supervised Experience (SE) Route to accreditation, working closely with Dr Liam Anderson throughout the process. Under Dr Liam Anderson’s supervision, Joe engaged in a structured development pathway that focused on continuous reflection, professional growth, and the application of science in performance environments. This close supervision was essential in helping Joe meet the high standards of the CASES competencies and shape his identity as a practitioner.

Throughout his journey, Joe has worked with Crewe Alexandra FC, where he developed his expertise in performance monitoring, data analysis, and athlete management. These experiences provided a strong foundation for applied sport science delivery and allowed Joe to test and refine his skills in a high-performance setting. He now works as a performance scientist at Stockport County FC, where he continues to develop and apply his knowledge in a fast-paced, competitive environment. His progression through these roles exemplifies the link between professional development and real-world impact—something that CASES accreditation is designed to highlight and support.

The CASES pathway evaluates candidates against a range of competencies, including scientific understanding and application, communication, professional practice, and reflective development. Joe’s ability to demonstrate all of these—across varied and demanding professional environments—has been key to his success. It’s not just about technical knowledge; it’s about using that knowledge to inform practice, make ethical decisions, and contribute meaningfully to multidisciplinary teams.

Joe’s achievement stands as a powerful example of how structured development, mentorship, and hands-on experience can prepare early-career professionals for success. His journey underscores the message we continue to promote within the GSSPP:  accreditation isn’t a final destination, but a mark of the journey and a commitment to continued growth, reflection, and impact

For those considering the CASES route, Joe’s story offers inspiration and a clear example of what’s possible with the right support, ambition, and applied experience. It’s been great to see you grow over the past few years and I’m excited to see how your career continues to flourish in years to come.
